Most Popular South Indian Dishes

The Southern India is famous for its various spices and variety of foods. The chief south Indian dishes have a combination of Coconut, rice and pulses etc. The main South Indian food is rice which is consumed with various types of Sāmbhar and curry.  The main spices used in south Indian dishes are cardamom, curry leaves, cloves, mustard seeds, pepper and cinnamon etc. South Indian food is also famous across the country for being less fattening because of the balanced use of oil and spices into it.

 

Dosa

Dosa from South India is a staple food in its home region. In the rest of the country too, Dosa are hugely popular. Though Dosa typically with rice and lentils but some variations include egg dosa, which is spread with an omelette, and cheese dosa, which is stuffed with cheese.

Idli

Idlis is a savory cake of south Indian origin popular throughout India. This is made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented black lentils and rice. Most often eaten at breakfast or as a snack, idlis are usually served in pairs with chutney or sambar.

Sambhar Vada

This is a very delicious breakfast popular in South India.  It is actually vada (made of Uradu dhal) which is dipped in sambar. It is not just in everyday cuisine but is also an indispensable part of the menu on festivals and puja days.

Uttapam

Uttapam is a very delicious South Indian recipe made with a urad dal and rice, seasoning and top with vegetables.  It is actually more like a thick, round pancake, eaten as a snack. The fresh chilies, tomatoes and cilantro add color and a fresh taste.

Upma

Upma is a traditional south Indian breakfast dish made from rawa, suji or semolina. It served with coconut chutney, lime slices or lime pickle. Upma is a very delicious and easy to make recipe and an  excellent breakfast item.
