Action on vehicle: Registration of 10 year old diesel and 15 year old petrol vehicles will be canceled

Overview

The action on the old diesel vehicle is to start from the beginning of the new year. The Delhi government will cancel the registration of all diesel vehicles that are 10 years old with effect from January 1, 2022. The government will issue No Objection Certificate (NOC) for these vehicles so that they can be re-registered at other places. This step of the government is being taken due to the instructions of the National Green Authority (NGT). According to an order issued by the Delhi Transport Department earlier this week, no NOC will be issued for diesel vehicles which are 15 years or more old. The NGT had in July 2016 issued directions to ban registration and plying of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in Delhi-NCR.

38 lakh used vehicles in Delhi-NCR

There are about 38 lakh old vehicles in Delhi. Of these, there are 35 lakh petrol and 3 lakh diesel vehicles. These vehicles cannot be driven on the roads of Delhi following the orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Supreme Court. The NGT has completely banned diesel cars of 10 years or older and petrol vehicles of 15 years or older in the capital. In such a situation, the Delhi government has opened a new option of electric in front of diesel vehicles.

Old vehicles will be able to sell outside Delhi-NCR

Diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years can be sold outside Delhi-NCR. The government has made it clear that NOC will be given to diesel vehicles aged 10 to 15 years, so that they can be re-registered outside Delhi-NCR. If the diesel vehicle is more than 15 years old then it will be scrapped.

Option available to convert diesel to e-vehicle

If you have a 10 year old diesel car then there is no need to worry. The Delhi government has opened the way to convert a 10-year-old diesel vehicle to electric. That is, you do not need to sell the car or give it in scrap. The Delhi government will also subsidize the cost of converting a diesel car into an electric one.

Why is this happening

Let us tell you that the Supreme Court had issued an order regarding this matter. It clearly states that the private vehicle will have to undergo an automated fitness test after 20 years and the commercial vehicle after 15 years. Heavy fine will be imposed for driving vehicles that do not pass this test.

Also, such vehicles will be confiscated. Those vehicles which will pass the fitness test, those vehicles will be allowed to run. Unfit vehicles will be sent to junk under the scrappage policy.
