What is E20 petrol?

When 80% of petrol and 20% of ethanol are mixed, it is called E20 petrol. It can be used as fuel just like petrol.

What is this EBP?

EBP stands for Ethanol Blending Program. This is a program of the government, under which a target was set in the year 2018 that by the year 2030, petrol with 20% ethanol blending would be available everywhere in the country. But in the year 2021, the government reduced the deadline of this target by five years. Now the target has been set to make E20 petrol available everywhere by 2025.

What is ethanol?

Ethanol is a type of alcohol. It is made from the fermentation of starch and sugar. It is made from sugarcane juice, maize, rotten potatoes, rotten vegetables, sweet beet, sorghum, rice bran, wheat bran or bamboo.

Is it also called flex fuel?

Yes, E20 petrol itself is called flex fuel or flexible fuel. This is because it can be used in any vehicle.

5 big advantages of using E20 petrol

1. The ethanol produced in E20 is a biofuel. It spreads less pollution than normal petrol.

2. Ethanol is also made from agricultural waste, so it will reduce the pollution in rural areas.

3. Ethanol is made from sugarcane juice, rotten potatoes and rotten vegetables, sugar beet, rice husk etc. That’s why farmers will also get its benefit.

4. E20 petrol is pocket friendly. The ethanol mixed in it is an easily available biofuel. Because of this its price is less than normal petrol.

5. The use of E20 will reduce the country’s dependence on the import of petrol. This will save the country’s foreign exchange.

Can E20 petrol be used in all types of vehicles?

Yes, E20 petrol can be used in all vehicles. Most of the vehicles in India have engines from BS-4 to BS-6 stage. Along with this, the engine makers had already been instructed to make engines for the E20 petrol. The government’s target is that by April 1, 2023, the engines of all vehicles will be favorable for E20 petrol.

Will E20 petrol be available at all petrol pumps from now on?

No, E20 petrol is not yet available at all petrol pumps in the country. Currently, E20 petrol will be available only at select petrol pumps in 11 states and union territories.

  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Punjab
  • Haryana
  • Uttarakhand
  • Delhi
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Bihar
  • Daman and Div
  • Dadar and Nagar Haveli
  • Maharashtra
  • Karnataka

When will E20 petrol be available across the country?

By the year 2025, E20 petrol will be available at all petrol pumps in the country. The government has also instructed vehicle manufacturers to make all engines E20 compatible by 2025.

Will E20 cost less than normal petrol?

Sales of another premium hatchback from Maruti, Baleno, have slipped once again in November after a slight recovery in October. Maruti sold 9,931 units of Baleno last month as against 15,573 units in October. Baleno has recently become the latest car from India’s largest car manufacturer to fail the Latin NCAP crash test. In November last year, Maruti sold 17,872 units of Baleno.

Can E20 petrol be used in old vehicles also?

E20 petrol can be used in older vehicles, but there will be a possibility of less mileage and less power. To avoid this, some changes can be made in the engine of the old vehicle.

How to convert old vehicles to E20 petrol?

If there are more old vehicles, then they can be scrapped under the new scrap policy. Apart from this, the pipes and some plastic parts of the engine can be changed. Although it can be a bit expensive.

Are there any disadvantages of E20 petrol?

Yes, E20 petrol will cause damage to vehicles with older engines. Its energy density is less than pure petrol. This means that the E20 petrol will have lower output and lower mileage. Apart from this, engine parts can be damaged due to ethanol. Therefore, the pipes and plastic parts of the engine may get damaged.

But this loss will not happen in new vehicles and E20 compatible vehicles. The older the vehicle, the better the petrol with less ethanol blend in it.
