GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications. It is a group of standards for telecommunications in the world and it is a partnership of different companies from all over the world.

Some of these standards are GSM time division multiple access (TDMA), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS).

GSM was developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and it saw its first commercial deployment in 1991. The GSM system was built to be more reliable, to be better able to repair itself, and to be less expensive than previous standards like AMPS.

There are two main components that make up a GSM network: the Base Station Subsystem (BSS) and the Mobile Station Subsystem (MS). Cellular networks require these two components to function together because they are not connected by wires or cables, they are independent wireless entities that communicate with each other using radio.
