MG Comet EV Review – How is MG’s new Comet EV, know everything with features and price

The era of electric vehicles is slowly but surely coming to India. Till now big electric vehicles have come in the market which are meant for family members.

The new electric car Comet EV has been launched in the Indian market on 26 April by British car company MG Motors. It has also become the smallest and cheapest electric car in the country. We are telling you in this news that if you are planning to buy this car, then whether buying this car will prove to be a profitable deal for you or not.

How is it looking?

Talking about the design of the car, at first glance this car may seem very small to you. But this is also its specialty. The size of the car helps the most while driving in city traffic. Seeing this, some people may remember Tata’s Lakhtakia car Nano and Maruti’s Wagon R. But an attempt has been made by MG to give it a much better design, which can be liked by many people. By the way, according to the company, this car has been made for those people, who do more driving in the city and do not carry much luggage with them.

How are the Features

Talking about the features in Comet EV, the company has given a lot of great features in it. As features, it has been given synthetic leather seat, leather covered steering wheel, 10.25 inch integrated floating wide screen. In simple words, it gets a big screen which is divided into parts. The size of both the screens is 10.25 inches. The infotainment system has been given in one screen. While the second screen shows the car’s range, battery status, drive mode, kilometer information, speed information as well as a comet.

Whenever the gaiters of the car open or the seat belt is not applied. At night the light is on high beam or the car is driven on low beam. You get all this information in the instrument cluster. The response of both the screens is quite good. Along with this, the music system available in it is also fine, but it could have been improved further.

There are also Apple iPod-like buttons on the steering, which look great. In the exterior of the car, connected DRL, LED headlights, LED taillights as well as connected lights have been given in the rear, which looks quite nice. Along with the rear camera, lines are also available for direction, which makes it very easy to reverse the car. Talking about the quality of the camera, it is also very good.

The MG Comet EV is only a four seater car and getting on the rear seats is very easy. For this, the one touch tumble function given in the front passenger seats has been given and due to the long doors, it becomes easy to go. For those wondering how safe the MG Comet EV is, the powerful body of the Comet EV has been crafted from 17 hot stamped panels. The MG Comet EV gets dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, TPMS, reversing camera and sensors, 3-point seatbelts and ISOFIX anchor points for children.

MG Comet EV Specifications & Size

The MG Comet EV is the smallest car in India so far in terms of size, it is 125 mm shorter than the Tata Nano. The length of MG Comet EV is 2974 mm, width is 1505 mm, height is 1640 mm. This electric car has a wheelbase of 2010 mm and a turning circle of 4.2 meters.

The MG Comet EV is powered by a 17.3kWh lithium-ion battery pack that offers an ARAI-certified range of 230 km on a single charge. The Comet EV only supports AC charging and the 3.3kW charging cable takes 7 hours (10-80% 5 hours) to charge the battery pack. Its battery pack is powered by a single electric motor on the rear axle of the Comet EV, which produces 41.4 bhp power and 110 Nm torque.

MG Comet EV Driving Experience

The procedure to start the MG Comet EV is the same as that of a normal car. Once in gear, double tap the brake pedal and the Comet EV starts moving. The powertrain of the Comet EV does not make noise and accelerates in a linear manner when you press the accelerator. Achieving a top speed of 110 km/h in the Comet EV is extremely easy. Coming to the steering, the tiny wheel comes with tilt adjustment only. However, it feels extremely light which is perfect for urban living, which is why the Comet EV is designed for it.

Enjoyable with a light steering wheel, rear wheel drive and manual handbrake. However, this steering is not that helpful in driving aggressively. Speaking of fun, driving the Comet EV fast on corners isn’t that much of a fun experience. This is because of the MG Comet EV’s tall boy design, short wheelbase, small wheels and soft suspension setup, which results in a lot of body roll.

While the suspension has been kept on the soft side, traversing bad roads, especially in New Delhi, is a painful experience to drive. Its 12-inch wheels come shod with 145/70 R12 tyres. The brakes provide enough stopping power which helps in earlier stopping and helps in avoiding bumps in the road. The Comet EV comes with disc brake at the front and drum brake at the rear with multiple levels of regen braking. The brake pedal offers ample travel and the brakes offer good initial bite And the more you keep pressing it, the better it provides progression.

The Comet EV comes with several regen modes which help in braking and the best one is the strong mode. However, the Comet EV does not offer the option of one-pedal driving, and we feel this is a major drawback considering that this electric car is designed for the city. MG claims that the Comet EV offers a range of 230 km on a single charge. Though we didn’t get a chance to drive it for a substantial amount of time in Delhi, we expect it to have a real world range of 170 kms.

How much is the price

The company has launched it at an ex-showroom price of Rs 7.98 lakh. After which it has become the cheapest electric car in the country. This price is introductory and can be changed later. At present, it will be available in the market at a lower price than Tata’s Tiago Electric.

Who is the Competition

MG’s Comet EV is a premium electric hatchback car. If you leave the length of the car, then it will compete with Tata Tiago Electric and Citroën’s C3 Electric. Where Comet can get the advantage of its price.

Thoughts on the MG Comet EV:

The MG Comet EV is a fun little electric car targeted at the generation whose first car is going to be electric. It comes with attractive looks, good interiors and a drive that will never let you get bored and the Comet EV Gen G could be just the right car for a driver who wants to leave the past behind with a little harsher ride in this electric age.
