PhD Full Form – Full Definition of PhD

The PhD’s full form is “Doctor of philosophy”. It stands for an academic degree that is awarded after completion of research and studies in the field of natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities etc. The degree was first introduced in 19th century Europe to denote the acquisition of skills and knowledge from at least three years or more of higher education.

The PhD or Doctorate degree is an academic degree that takes about four to six years to complete. It is a fairly broad degree that looks into the student’s specialization and they are forced to study a lot of different areas. It is a very rigorous program where students must be able to work in many different fields of study. That is why it takes so long to complete.

The original name for it was the “doctorate” because the university would hand out a “doctorate” to students who were successful in their studies. Nowadays, we refer to it as a PhD and it has been shortened from “Doctor of Philosophy” to “PhD.”
