MG (Morris Garages) Motor India today launched Hector for an introductory price of Rs 12.18 (ex-showroom, India).

British car maker annouces pricing for its first ever product in India, to take on premium SUVs like the Mahindra XUV500, Jeep Compass, Tata Harrier and Kia Seltos. The price comes as a major surprise as many had believed that the feature-loaded vehicle will cost much more. The top-spec MG Hector Sharp Diesel MT is priced at Rs. 16.88 lakh (ex-showroom, India). A major talking point in the Hector’s interior is the 10.4-inch iSmart touchscreen infotainment system that comes with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, AI-powered voice assist, pre-loaded apps and an embedded Airtel SIM card.

MG Hector Specifications:

The Hector is available in four variants – Style, Super, Smart and Sharp. The carmaker is offering three engine options – 1.5-litre petrol, 1.5-litre petrol hybrid and 2.0-litre diesel. The Powering of MG Hector will be a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that makes 143 PS and 250 Nm of peak torque. It is being offered with a 6-speed manual gearbox and has an option for a 6-speed DCT (Double Clutch Transmission). The premium SUV also gets a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel powertrain that churns out 170 PS and 350 Nm of peak torque. There is no automatic transmission here and the customers will get only a 6-speed manual gearbox.

Exterior

The Hector is based on the Baojun 530, which is a GM-Wulling platform. And visually, it’s almost identical, down to the alloy wheel design. But, it is an SUV with good street presence. That grille, along with the low set headlamps and the LED eyebrows, lend the Hector a very in-your-face aura. It looks like it could do with bigger wheels and possibly more clearance off the ground. The latter currently stands at 198mm. The rear meanwhile reminds one of the Qs, you know of the German variety. It has consistent shut lines, and even the door closing has a positive click to it.

Interior

The Hector is quite impressive on the inside. The fit and finish, and the look and feel of plastic all round, conveys a hint of richness. And unless you complain about not having soft grain plastic all over the dash top – though it has some over the console – there’s barely anything to crib about here. To be honest, the Hector is much better on the inside than we had imagined. And very much in line with what its expected pricing is. Additionally, there’s a whole lot of equipment on board too, especially in the top spec trim.
