Tata Nano GenX, without any doubt, leads the budget segment hatchback market in India. This cheapest-ever car, when launched, broke all the records of advance booking, and became an instant hit. To this bombshell, the Maruti Suzuki Motors brought its re-engineered model of Alto 800 packed with great competitive features. Both of these cars are available in petrol and CNG versions. However, the Tata Motors is planning to roll out Nano in diesel version too. The Tata Nano GenX XE and Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 STD are available at a price of Rs. 2.26 lakhs and Rs. 2.46 lakhs (approx. Price After GST Ex-Showroom New Delhi) respectively. Performance:

The Alto 800 comes with an 800cc 3-cylinder, F8D petrol engine which produces 48 Ps at 6000 rpm of maximum power and 69 Nm at 3500 rpm of torque. However, the Nano GenX boasts of a comparatively smaller engine of 624cc, Multi Fuel Injection petrol engine which generates a maximum power of 38 Ps and torque of 48 Nm. The former has five gears while the latter has four manual transmission gears. Thus, the Alto 800 is more powerful with an extra cylinder and gear which is visible in its performance. It offers a mileage of 22.4kmpl with petrol and 30km/kg with CNG. Tata Nano GenX though claims a mileage of 25.4kmpl.

Exterior:

When it’s about the facade, the Alto 800 boasts of a simple yet appealing exterior. Its wave-front design imparts it a fresh look. Its side profile is dominated by prominent wheel arch and wider lips. The high intensity headlamp clusters along with stylish grille and body coloured bumper at front give it a sporty look. Its side and rear profile resembles the A-Star. Its curvy side profile has 12-inch steel wheels designed in 6 bi-spoke pattern. The rear with its neat and curvy design makes it an overall good looking car.

Probably the Tata Motors put most of its efforts in developing a “1-lakh car”. The Nano GenX has got a little boxy exterior however the diamond shaped headlamp clusters, body coloured bumper, ORVM and door handles make up for the hitch. Its rear also has body coloured bumper and fog lamps. It has been given a “tall boy” design which offers a convenient space inside.

Interior:

The Alto 800 comes in brown and grey coloured cabin options, lending it a refined look. It has got silver lined door handles with fabric inserted door trim that look luxurious. It offers adjustable seats and head rest to provide comfort to the passengers. The Alto 800 has a seating capacity of five people. As compared to Alto 800, the Nano GenX is spacious and comes in beige coloured cabin. The upholstery is offered in trendy black or dual tone vinyl colour as per the variant, while the dashboard is done in Ebony Black colour. The Nano GenX can comfortably accommodate four people.

Features:

Both Alto 800  and Tata Nano GenX are loaded with some interesting  features like parcel tray, front cup holder, rear headrest, glove compartment and front and rear seat-belts, power steering, air conditioning with heater, central locking, front power windows, tachometer and digital odometer. However, the features like music system with four speakers, USB connectivity, driver’s side airbag, low fuel warning light, dual tone upholstery, remote fuel lid rear gate opener, dual trip meter, and clock are only available in the top-end variant.

Colors:

The Maruti Alto 800 is available in Silky Silver, Superior White, Granite Grey, Blazing Red, Cerulean Blue and Mojito Green colour options. While the Tata Nano GenX is offered in Meteor Silver, Sangria Red, Damson Purple, Dazzle Blue, Pearl White, Persian Rose and Royal Gold.

To put in concise terms, both Alto 800 and Nano GenX are fuel-efficient and are out-and-out meant for budget-conscious people. Given to its better engine, Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 is better when it comes to performance. However, Tata Nano GenX offers amazing mileage covering all the snags and is obviously available at very modest price.
